Since the explosion on district thirteen, the Capitol has created a game to remind the other districts that the Capitol is the one in control. Each year, every district has two give one boy and one girl who is from 12 to 18 years old to fight in a life-or-death contest to see who is the best. The winner will be provided one of the special houses made for the victors and will become rich, but they will have to kill the other tributes to win.
Katniss Everdeen is a 16-year-old girl who lives in district 12 with her mum and her little sister, Prim. As her father died when she was 11, she has been taking care of her family since then. The day of the reaping Katniss, Prim and their mum went to see who had to go into the games. As Prim had turned twelve that year, her name was in the reaping for the first time. As always, they start by saying the girl’s name. Although she had all of the odds in her favor to not get selected, Prim´’s name was said. As Katniss didn´t want Prim to go in there, she volunteers to take her place. That surprises the crowd, because, in districts 1,2 and 4, winning is a real honour, in district twelve there has only been one victor, so the odds are not on her favor. Things turn worst when the second name comes out. Peeta, a boy, though they never talked in school, Katniss wouldn’t like to have to kill, was called, Katniss feels even worst about the games. Some years ago, Peeta had given some food to them when they needed. Katniss didn’t have the opportunity to thank him, now she would never have the chance.
I really liked this book and I think it was really original.
